Average / Mean Calculator
Type or paste your numbers and get the mean (average), median, mode and range at once.
| Median | 15 |
|---|---|
| Modo | 8 |
| Alcance | 38 |
| Sum | 116 (7) |
| Sorted | 4, 8, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 |
Separate the numbers with commas or spaces. Mode shows — when no number repeats.
What is an average?
An average is one number that sums up a whole list of numbers. When people say “the average” they usually mean the mean: share the total out equally and see how much each value would get. If five friends score 6, 7, 7, 9 and 11 in a quiz, the total is 40, so the mean score is 40 ÷ 5 = 8.
The mean is not always the fairest summary. One very large or very small value (an outlier) pulls it a long way. House prices and salaries are usually quoted as a median for this reason: the middle value does not move when one billionaire joins the list. The mode is the best choice when the data are categories rather than numbers, such as the most popular shoe size in a class.
El range is not an average at all. It tells you how spread out the values are, which is why exam questions often ask you to compare two sets of data using one average and the range together.
How to find the mean, median, mode and range
- Mean: add all the values and divide by how many there are.
- Median: sort the values; take the middle one (or the mean of the middle two).
- Modo: the value that appears most often (there can be more than one, or none).
- Alcance: largest value − smallest value.
Ejemplo resuelto
For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 8: the total is 116, so the mean is 116 ÷ 7 ≈ 16.57. Sorted: 4, 8, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, so the median is 15, the mode is 8 and the range is 42 − 4 = 38.

Preguntas frecuentes
How do you calculate the average?
Add all the numbers up, then divide by how many there are. The average of 4, 8 and 12 is (4 + 8 + 12) ÷ 3 = 8.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the total divided by the count. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often.
How do you find the median of an even number of values?
Sort them and take the mean of the two middle values. For 1, 3, 5, 7 the median is (3 + 5) ÷ 2 = 4.
What is the range?
The largest value minus the smallest. It measures how spread out the numbers are.
