Rounding Calculator

Type a number, choose how many decimal places or significant figures to keep, and see it rounded instantly.

Rounded3.14

Decimal places count digits after the point; significant figures count all meaningful digits from the first non-zero one.

How to round a number by hand

  1. Decide which digit you are rounding to (a decimal place, or the nth significant figure).
  2. Look at the next digit along. 5 or more rounds up; 4 or less stays the same.
  3. Drop every digit after the one you rounded to (replacing them with zeros if they are before the decimal point).

Worked example

Round 3.14159 to 2 decimal places: the digit after the second decimal place is 1, so it stays as it is, giving 3.14.

Round 1,234 to 2 significant figures: the third significant digit is 3, so round down, giving 1,200.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What is the rule for rounding numbers?

Look at the digit right after the place you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more, round the last kept digit up; if it is 4 or less, leave it unchanged.

What is the difference between decimal places and significant figures?

Decimal places count digits after the decimal point only. Significant figures count every meaningful digit starting from the first non-zero one, so they also apply to whole numbers.

How do you round 2.5 to the nearest whole number?

The digit after the point is 5, so round up: 2.5 rounds to 3.

How do you round a number to 2 significant figures?

Keep the first two non-zero digits and round based on the third. For 1,234, that gives 1,200; for 0.00456, that gives 0.0046.
